Ugly duckling

Following my latest trip away I thought I would visit my local patch or Martin Mere WWT to anyone else.

Things where pretty quiet there since all the swans have moved on, so this in mind I thought I would pay a bit of attention to a bird that generally I don't take any notice of.

Moorhens are everywhere and normally when you see one you normally say "just another Moorhen" or "only a Moorhen", but I watched them for a while and it was their chicks that I kind of like, got to be said possibly the ugliest chicks out there. Like balls of black fluff and with a bald head, in the first shot you can see the ear socket.

Mum was ever watchful over them.

It rained a little whilst there, but passed over after 20 mins or so, nice to watch from a warm hide.
Normally when the Lapwing take off like this there is a Peregrine around somewhere, but nothing was to be seen. All photos taken 03/07/2008.

  1. Nice one, Mike. Though I don't think it's her mom, you shot there. It's an older sibling (about 6 months old). Doesn't have a faceplate yet - but actually starts helping mom feeding the young ones.
And that's pretty cool, having sibling doing household chores! :)
    Cheers, Klaus

  4. Ahhhh....I think they are cute! The first shot is great for all the detail like the ear and around the eye and beak! But I really like the second picture of the big feet poised on the grasses :-)
