Mere Sands Wood - Pt 1

The first post of my visit to Mere Sands is just going to give a better idea to anyone who may not have visited there of what it's like.

As you will see from the first two shots water and trees perfect, actually it's made up of 4 lakes and surrounded by 7 hides all looking over a lake or part of one and plenty of reed beds.

The reeds you can see in the middle of the photo above are where I photographed the Grebes earlier in the year, you can see them HERE.

The next few shots are to show the diversity of things around the reserve.
I caught this dragonfly as it landed near the hide shown in the second photo, the reeds are quite overgrown there and made a perfect landing spot, I'm afraid someone will have to ID this for me, the photo after this is a Red Admiral Butterfly.

There are a great number of different species of birds on the reserve also from Coots like in the next shot to Herons shown in the last shot, I will show you a greater range of the garden type birds in my next post.

For now I hope you like the shots.

All photos taken 13/07/2008.

  1. That looks like a wonderful place to see all sorts of wildlife. I've never been in a hide before and can't imagine what it is like taking photos that way. But you certainly get good results! I feel like I am right in the water behind the coots looking at them at eye level and stalking across the water with the Great Blue! Can't help you on the dragonfly but it is a terrific shot! The butterfly is so nicely lit and as always the texture is so obvious. I can't even imagine acheiving that sort of photography.

  2. The Coot tending its chick is sweet. The hides let you get close shots of the birds.

This place looks similar to some of the places we go to bird. There are no hides for anyone. You just have to get lucky to get a good picture.

  3. One of the photos reminds me of a lake I like to go to. About the photos... all I can say is... I'm so jealous! :-)

  5. These are all beautiful. Amazing details on the dragonfly. I can see its hairy legs! Cute adult and baby coot picture. Great butterfly and the heron shot is "aces."
