GS Woodpecker

One for Lisa..

Not as grand as the name might have you think, however we also have a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker which is slightly plainer than this one.

From the red tuft on the back of the birds neck tells you this one is a female, the yound have a red crown as the last photo shows.

Hope you like it. I will try and get some up to date photos with my new lens, I found the hole where they nest last year and would like a pic of it poking its head out.

  1. What a handsome bird Mike. I envisioned a big brown woodpecker so I was surprised to see this lovely black and white bird. His rump appears to be red in one of the photos. It also looks like you need to have napkins out for guests since it appears to need to wipe its beak in the last picture. ;)

I have seen Pileated Woodpecker young peeking out of a nest hole before. It is an unusual sight to see. Please share you pictures of the GS Woody.

And many thanks for indulging me thus far. :)
