Formby Mammals

I've been visiting Formby Point quite often lately, a chance to relax after a day at work.

On my last few visits I haven't seen a single squirrel, tonight though was a little more positive. We saw at least 4 Red Squirrels (I know that doesn't sound a lot), but when you walk round the woods and don't see even one you get a bit down hearted.

Heres a shot of one that came close in.

Another bit of good news is after walking along the beach trying to photograph waders which kept flying off before I could get anywhere near, we got back in the car to head home and came across the resident fox and I'm no expert but he looks a little healthier to me. Let me know what you think.

I think it will be back to birds for a while now.. hope you liked the Formby shots.

Formby Fox

After a pretty good day on Sunday, I thought that we would go to Formby Point this evening to see if I could photograph some Red Squirrels, sadly I didn't see a single one. After reading a notice that was up it appears since Nov 07 the Squirrels have been catching a form of Squirrel Pox, which so far has wiped out around 28no.

Below is a shot of the path which runs through the woods and takes you right down to the beach.

Not all was lost, as we got out of the car the fox was right there in front of us, looking rather thin and his right eye wasn't looking too clever either.

He must be so used to human traffic as he just walked by, I'm unsure if this is the same fox as on BBC's Autumn Watch, you can see my original shots HERE from last year, but it does have some similar characteristics - slight limp, sticky eye and thin, I can't imagine it's catching much food, seems a little too slow.

Here are the shots from tonight.

Formby Point Revisited.

As I haven't been able to get out lately with the weather being so poor I thought I would post a few more pictures of the red squirrels and couldn't resist showing another photo of the fox.

I am hoping to get back there shortly and with any luck might get a bit of sun.

There has been a couple of foxes spotted fighting locally to where I live, I will be taking a walk where this was but dont' think I'll be lucky enough to see them.

Formby Point

In my blog I am hoping to show some of the local wildlife hot spots.

After watching the first week of Autumn watch I decided to go to Formby point, about half an hours drive, there we saw the BBC film crew filming the now famous Fox and Red Squirels.

Here are a few of the shots I took whilst there:
